Gabriel de Oliveira

Dr. Gabriel de Oliveira is an Assistant Professor in the Stokes School of Marine & Environmental Sciences at the University of South Alabama and a Senior Scientist I at Dauphin Island Sea Lab. He is also an Early-Career Fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Gulf Research Program (2023-2025) and an Ambassador for Alabama in the AGU Local Science Partners Program (2023-2025). His work focuses on understanding how deforestation, fire, and droughts affect plant ecophysiological processes and regional climate in Amazonia, using remote sensing and ground observations.

Education:

• B.S. in Geography, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil)
• M.S. and Ph.D. in Remote Sensing, National Institute for Space Research (Brazil)
• Postdoctoral studies at University of Kansas (USA) and University of Toronto (Canada)

Research Interests: Vegetation Dynamics, Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions, Water and Carbon Cycling, Remote Sensing/GIS, Land Use and Land Cover Changes, Amazonian Ecology. His research emphasizes the survival of Amazon plants, ecosystem responses to climate change, and applications of satellite imagery for environmental monitoring.

Publications: Dr. de Oliveira has authored over 40 peer-reviewed articles in top journals like Science, Nature Ecology and Evolution, and Remote Sensing of Environment. His work addresses Amazon deforestation, fire dynamics, and climate-vegetation feedbacks.
