John Valentine

Dr. John Valentine is Professor at the University of South Alabama and Executive Director of Dauphin Island Sea Lab, where he leads Alabama's Marine Environmental Consortium. His research examines trophic interactions in coastal ecosystems, specializing in seagrass ecology and oyster reef restoration. Education includes a Ph.D. from University of Alabama (1989).

Research investigates energy flow across marine habitats, particularly how biotic processes and human perturbations affect submerged vegetation communities. Current projects analyze climate-driven species expansions, invasive species impacts, and restoration techniques. Publications document hurricane effects on seagrass, predator-prey dynamics, and oil spill recovery. As Director of Alabama's RESTORE Act Center of Excellence, he coordinates Gulf-wide research on coastal resilience.
