Gabriel G. Katul is the George Pearsall Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering. He also holds a professorship in the Division of Earth and Ocean Sciences, reflecting his interdisciplinary work bridging engineering, earth sciences, and environmental systems. His research spans multiple institutions through numerous visiting fellowships worldwide, including appointments at University of Virginia, CSIRO Australia, University of Helsinki, Politecnico di Torino, EPFL Switzerland, Nagoya University, and Princeton University.
His educational background includes a B.E. from the American University of Beirut (1988), M.S. from Oregon State University (1990), and Ph.D. from University of California, Davis (1993). These academic foundations have supported his distinguished career in environmental fluid mechanics and eco-hydrology.
Katul's research focuses on micro-meteorology and near-surface hydrology with emphasis on heat, momentum, carbon dioxide, water vapor, ozone, and particulate matter transport in the soil-plant-atmosphere system. His work integrates statistical mechanics, xylem network mapping, and sucrose transport in phloem using optimality theories. He has developed approaches that explain the form and function of terrestrial vegetation from eco-hydrological and carbon-economy perspectives across spatial and temporal scales, addressing fundamental questions in plant hydraulics and atmospheric boundary layer processes.
His extensive publication record shows consistent output in top journals across hydrology, atmospheric science, and fluid dynamics. Recent work demonstrates continued innovation in understanding turbulence structures, scalar transport mechanisms, plant hydraulics, and the application of optimality principles to ecological systems. His research increasingly bridges traditional disciplinary boundaries, connecting plant physiology with atmospheric processes and hydrological systems.

Throughout his career, Katul has mentored numerous students and collaborators across multiple institutions. His research has been supported by various funding agencies enabling extensive field measurements and theoretical developments. He served as Secretary General for the Hydrologic Science Section at the American Geophysical Union (2006-2008) and has been instrumental in advancing the understanding of land-atmosphere interactions through both theoretical and empirical approaches.
Katul maintains active research laboratories focused on turbulence measurements, plant hydraulics, and eco-hydrological processes. His team employs a combination of field measurements, laboratory experiments, and theoretical modeling to address fundamental questions in environmental fluid mechanics and their applications to climate change and ecosystem functioning.
