Prof. Gabriel Blouin-Demers is a Full Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Ottawa. His research focuses on evolutionary ecology, physiological ecology, and conservation biology, particularly in reptiles. He holds a PhD from Carleton University (2001) and a BSc from McGill University (1996), with postdoctoral training at Ohio State University (2002). He has supervised over 65 undergraduate, 35 master's, and 10 PhD students. His work addresses spatial density variations in animal populations and polymorphism, with a strong conservation component targeting reptiles.
Blouin-Demers has published over 160 peer-reviewed articles and secured funding from NSERC and government contracts. His research bridges fundamental ecology and applied conservation, including studies on habitat selection, thermal ecology, and anthropogenic impacts. He is a co-editor of two journals and contributes to public outreach through radio segments on Radio-Canada's Moteur de Recherche.
His lab's current projects explore road effects on reptile abundance, thermal constraints on ectotherms, and the impact of climate change on species distribution. Notable achievements include defining critical habitats for endangered species and documenting road mortality effects. He collaborates internationally and has trained numerous students in field and lab methodologies.
