Prof. G.V. Shivashankar serves as a Full Professor of Mechano-Genomics at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology, ETH Zurich, and is jointly affiliated with the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland. His research program investigates the coupling between cell mechanics and genome organization to understand cell-state homeostasis and transitions in disease, utilizing multi-disciplinary approaches including single-cell imaging, functional genomics, and machine learning.
His educational background includes:
- PhD from Rockefeller University (1994-1999)
- Postdoctoral research at NEC Research Institute, Princeton (1999-2000)
Shivashankar's research in mechanobiology and mechano-genomics addresses how cells integrate mechanical and biochemical signals within tissue microenvironments. His group's work has significant implications for regenerative medicine and early disease diagnostics, focusing on the mechanical regulation of genome programs at the single-cell level.
His scientific awards and recognitions include:
- Birla Science Prize (2006)
- Swarnajayanthi Fellowship (2007)
- Election to the Indian Academy of Sciences (2010)
- EMBO Membership (2019)
Prof. Shivashankar has held significant leadership roles including Deputy Director of the Mechanobiology Institute at NUS (2011-2019) and IFOM-NUS Chair Professor (2014-2019). He currently leads a research group at ETH Zurich and PSI dedicated to unraveling the mechano-genomic basis of cell-state transitions.
