Prof. Günter Poethke (1939–2020) served as Adjunct Professor of Papyrology at Humboldt University in Berlin. His primary research focused on Greek papyri and ancient textual analysis. He held roles as a research associate (1962) and curator (1977) at Berlin's Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection, part of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. Educated at Friedrich Schiller University Jena (1957–1962), he earned his doctorate (1968) and habilitation (1988) at Humboldt University, becoming a private lecturer in 1995 before his adjunct professorship (1999).
He was a member of the International Association of Papyrologists and co-edited Archiv für Papyrusforschung. His work emphasized interdisciplinary approaches to ancient manuscripts, bridging classical philology and archaeological studies.
