Fuat Kara

Dr. Fuat Kara is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering (Ocean Engineering) at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU), where he leads the MENG/BENG/FdENG Mechanical Engineering Courses. Previously, he held senior academic roles at Cranfield University and the University of Strathclyde. His expertise spans naval architecture, marine hydrodynamics, offshore renewable energy systems, and computational fluid dynamics. He developed the advanced ITU-WAVE tool for wave-structure interaction analysis.

• MSc in Higher Order Vibration of Ship Structures, Istanbul Technical University (1996)
• PhD in Marine Hydrodynamics & Hydroelasticity, University of Strathclyde (2000)

• Fluid-structure interaction in offshore energy systems
• Wave energy converters and wind turbine dynamics
• Hydroelasticity and aerodynamics of marine structures
• Offshore pipeline and subsea engineering
• Numerical modeling with computational fluid dynamics

Advising & Grants:

• Supervised over 10 PhD/MSc projects, focusing on pipeline slugging, wave energy arrays, and hydroelasticity
• Secured funding from EPSRC, European Commission, and industry partners like Expro Group and BP

Labs & Teams:

• Lead the Motion Dynamics and Control research group at Strathclyde
• Established Cranfield's Offshore & Ocean Technology (OOT) MSc program
