Frode Flemsæter

Frode Flemsæter is a Professor at the Department of Geography and Social Anthropology at NTNU’s Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences. His research focuses on rural and regional geography, emphasizing land use management, natural/cultural resource valuation, and the interplay between legal frameworks and landscape dynamics. He has contributed to understanding property rights in contested areas like mountain regions and coastal zones.

Key research themes include:

• Land-use conflicts and governance in disputed landscapes
• Morality and ethics in outdoor spaces (‘utmarka’)
• Temporal analysis of mountain ecosystems
• Sociolegal dimensions of smallholder property

He co-authored influential works such as Utmark i endring (2021) and led projects like the ‘Horisont Snøhetta’ initiative investigating reindeer herding and land use in the Snøhetta region. His interdisciplinary approach bridges geography, law, and sociology.
