Frits Andersen is a Professor at the Department of Comparative Literature within the School of Communication and Culture at Aarhus University. His primary affiliation is centered on advancing interdisciplinary research in literary studies with a focus on oceanic, postcolonial, and global cultural dynamics.
Research Interests: Andersen’s work explores intersections between literary geography, oceanic studies, and postcolonial narratives. He investigates how maritime spaces, colonial encounters, and environmental themes shape cultural imaginaries across historical and geographical contexts. His studies often critique Eurocentric perspectives and emphasize planetary and transnational frameworks.
Publications: Notable works include Wonders: A Literary History of the Deep Sea and The South Sea Island: A Geography of Pleasure, examining oceanic spaces as sites of cultural and political significance. His articles blend close textual analysis with broader environmental and postcolonial theory.
Projects: He leads initiatives like the CLCS (Centre for the Study of the Literatures and Cultures of Slavery, 2018–2023) and contributes to networks like the Humanistic Studies in Human Rights (2011–2016). These projects address slavery narratives, humanitarian culture, and 19th-century literary networks.
Labs/Teams: Active in the CLCS research center, focusing on global slavery literatures and comparative methodologies.
