Friedrich Hirzebruch was a Full Professor of Mathematics at the University of Bonn (1956–1993) and Founding Director of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (MPI) in Bonn (1980–1995). He held prestigious positions including Assistant Professor at Princeton University, Member at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), and Scientific Assistant at the University of Erlangen.
His academic journey began with studies in mathematics, physics, and mathematical logic at the University of Münster and ETH Zürich, culminating in a Ph.D. from Münster in 1950. He later completed his Habilitation there in 1955.
Hirzebruch’s research spanned algebraic topology, geometry, and mathematical physics, earning him global recognition. His accolades include the Wolf Prize, Lobachevskij Prize, and Georg Cantor Medal. He was honored with honorary doctorates from 15 institutions worldwide.
His leadership at the MPI fostered collaborative research in mathematics, cementing his legacy in academia.
