Elias M. Stein (1931–2018) was a distinguished full professor of Mathematics at Princeton University, holding the Albert Dod Professorship until his retirement in 2012. He served twice as Chair of the Mathematics Department and contributed significantly to Princeton University Press. Born in Antwerp, he fled Belgium during WWII, graduating from Stuyvesant High School (1949) and earning his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1955) under Antoni Zygmund.
Stein revolutionized mathematical fields through discoveries like H p spaces, complex interpolation of operators, and the Kunze-Stein phenomenon. His research bridged Fourier Analysis, Representation Theory, and Partial Differential Equations. He authored foundational textbooks, notably a four-volume series with Rami Shakarchi, and advised over 50 students, shaping generations of mathematicians.
Stein received prestigious awards including the National Medal of Science and Wolf Prize, and honorary degrees from Peking University and the University of Chicago. His legacy endures through his transformative contributions to mathematics and education.
