Friedemann Brennecke

Professor Friedemann Brennecke serves as Professor of Music Theory at the Würzburg University of Music since the winter semester of 2024/25. Previously, he taught at institutions in Mainz, Bremen, Münster, Düsseldorf, and Essen after completing his studies in music theory and composition across Hamburg, Paris, Freiburg, and Essen.

His research centers on 17th-century music, with particular emphasis on historical and contemporary improvisation methodologies for academic instruction. Brennecke approaches music theory from both scholarly and practical compositional perspectives.

His publications reveal a strong focus on harmonic structures in early music, particularly examining the augmented triad across different historical periods. His work bridges theoretical musicology with practical compositional techniques, analyzing both Baroque composers like Samuel Scheidt and Romantic figures like Robert Schumann.
