Leonard Schelb serves as Professor of Baroque Flute at the Cologne University of Music and Dance (HfMT Köln) since 2018, while also teaching at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf. An active performer and scholar, he specializes in German and French Baroque repertoire with emphasis on historical source analysis and compositional techniques, maintaining a robust performance schedule across Europe.
His academic training spans recorder and traverso studies at music universities in Freiburg, Frankfurt, and Basel under Prof. Agnes Dorwarth, Michael Form, Prof. Marc Hantaȉ, Prof. Karl Kaiser, and Prof. Michael Schneider.
Schelb's research centers on 17th-19th century flute literature, integrating deep source criticism with performance practice to refine interpretations of Baroque works. He prioritizes balancing historical authenticity with artistic expression, particularly in German and French traditions, while exploring compositional structures and period stylistic conventions through both scholarly and practical lenses.
As a performer, he collaborates with ensembles including Akamus Berlin, Freiburger Barock-Orchester, and Concerto Köln, appearing at festivals throughout Germany, Europe, and Syria. His radio contributions span SWR, WDR, and ORF broadcasts, with chamber music recordings receiving critical acclaim. An upcoming performance is scheduled for the Traversflötenabend on November 15, 2025, at Cologne's Kammermusiksaal.
