Dr. Frederik Boven is a historical psychologist and researcher at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences, specializing in the conceptual history of autism in child psychiatry. He received his PhD in February 2022 for his dissertation Solitary Persons? The Conceptualisation of Autism as a Contact Disorder by Frankl, Asperger, and Kanner, examining early autism theories between 1938-1978.
His research interests include:
- The history of autism in child psychiatry
- Philosophy of autism spectrum conditions
- Political philosophy and phenomenology
- Inclusive academic learning for autistic students
Boven's publications reveal a strong focus on historical analysis of autism theories, particularly examining how Frankl, Asperger, and Kanner conceptualized autism as a contact disorder. His recent work has expanded into practical applications for autistic students in higher education and critical examinations of historical contexts, including Asperger's relationship with Nazi ideology. His research bridges historical scholarship with contemporary autism understanding, often incorporating his personal perspective as someone diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at age 34.
Boven actively contributes to autism discourse through peer review for journals including Advances in Autism and Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme, where he serves on the editorial board.
As an autism coach and founder of Autisme Digitaal, Boven supports autistic individuals through various initiatives including webinars, online discussion groups, and personalized coaching for university students. His approach combines academic expertise with lived experience to create meaningful support structures for the autistic community.
