Dr Frederick Poi Kee Low is an Associate Professor of Counselling at James Cook University Singapore, with over 20 years of experience in social care, humanitarian work, and academic leadership. He holds adjunct roles at University of Malaya and Buddhist College of Singapore, and sits on editorial boards for counselling journals. His research focuses on school counselling, interdisciplinary collaborations, refugee mental health, and qualitative research methods. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Therapeutic Advisory Council at Family Justice Courts and on the Review Board under the Children & Young Persons Act.
Dr Low has earned multiple accolades including the 2022 Catalyst Award and 2023 Teaching Excellence Award. His consultancy work spans organizations like Children’s Aid Society and MINDS. He advises on national mental health strategies and contributes to policy development through roles in MSF Expert Panels and the Social Service SkillsFuture Taskforce. His educational background includes a Doctor of Professional Studies from University of Southern Queensland and dual master’s degrees in psychology from University of Southern Queensland and University College Dublin.
Research publications emphasize systemic challenges in school counselling, refugee education quality, and clinician well-being. Over 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters reflect his commitment to addressing mental health needs of vulnerable populations. His teaching expertise covers psychodynamic therapy, person-centered approaches, and integrative psychotherapy.
