Dr. Frederick Joanne is an Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling at George Mason University, affiliated with the Division of Child, Family, and Community Engagement. She holds an EdD in Rehabilitation Counseling from The George Washington University, a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from the University of Baltimore, and a Bachelor’s in Psychology from Morgan State University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in DC, Maryland, and Virginia, specializing in anxiety, depression, relationship issues, terminal illnesses, and learning disabilities. She co-founded a nonprofit offering low-cost counseling and authored “Copeology,” addressing grief, survivors’ guilt, and spirituality in therapy.
Her research interests focus on mental health advocacy, multicultural counseling practices, and integrating spirituality with psychological approaches. She teaches courses such as Advanced Human Growth and Development, Foundations in Counseling, and Multicultural Counseling. Dr. Joanne is also prominent in media, hosting “The Ask Doctor Joanne” show on YouTube and featured in outlets like Forbes Health and ABC. She advocates for mental health equity across communities and emphasizes accessible coping strategies.
