Frederick Hardtke serves as an Academic Casual in the School of Computing and Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Humanities at Macquarie University, leveraging 20+ years of archaeological fieldwork expertise in Egypt with specialization in rock art documentation and virtual heritage technologies.
His academic credentials include:
- BA from Macquarie University (2003)
- MA by Research from Macquarie University (2012)
- PhD from Macquarie University (2016) focusing on rock art at Hierakonpolis, Egypt
Research centers on rock art as material culture within arid environments, particularly Egyptian Predynastic/Early Dynastic periods, with emphasis on digital preservation methodologies. Current leadership of the Belgian-Australian mission to El Hosh employs advanced 3D capture techniques to document threatened petroglyphs spanning Palaeolithic to modern eras.
Recent publications (2019-2024) reveal consistent thematic focus on Egyptian rock art interpretation, legacy data integration, and cultural dynamics, featuring significant discoveries like 'Goat-Fish' iconography and camouflaged chameleon depictions at El Hosh.
Recognition includes:
- Chandra Jayawardena Memorial Prize (1999)
Active research involvement includes Associate Investigator roles in the Centre for Ancient Cultural Heritage and Environment (CACHE, 2019-2022) and Macquarie University Mission to El Hosh (2019-2020), with 13 presentations on rock art chronology and contextual analysis since 2005.
He directs the multinational Belgian-Australian archaeological mission at El Hosh, Egypt, dedicated to comprehensive documentation of one of the Nile Valley's most significant rock art landscapes facing environmental and anthropogenic threats.
