Fred W. Krüger serves as Full Professor of Geography at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg within the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Department of Geography. He holds leadership roles including membership on the board of directors of the Institute of Geography and has previously served as Head of Department of Geography and Geosciences, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Sciences, and Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences III.
Professor Krüger's research bridges Development Geography and Urban Studies through a cross-disciplinary lens, focusing on culture-risk-environment interconnections. His work examines vulnerability, livelihood security, and disaster prevention in the Global South, with particular attention to urban contexts in eastern and southern Africa and Southeast Asia. Key conceptual frameworks include the 'just city' and 'right to the city' paradigms, which inform his analysis of urban planning, everyday cultures, and public space production.
Current research projects demonstrate significant third-party funding expertise, including COVLess (Volkswagen Foundation), CHIDA (BMBF), AfriCity (BMBF/DAAD), and LIPSINDAR (BMBF), addressing urban food security, nature-based solutions, and inclusive development. His publication record spans over three decades with influential contributions including the 2014 World Disasters Report as lead author.

Professor Krüger leads the Working Group Routines and Ruptures in Cultures and Cities (R2C2), which examines how cultural practices mediate urban risk and transformation. His teaching spans all degree levels with specialized Master's workshops on Cultures and Disasters and urban research topics. Current supervision focuses on Master's level research in development and urban studies, with recent projects examining environmental action in Botswana, future city scenarios, and urban food security systems.
