Prof. Dr. Fred Krüger is a Professor of Geography at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, leading the AG Routines and Ruptures in Cultures and Cities (R2C2) research group within the Institute of Geography. His work focuses on geographical development studies, vulnerability and risk in disaster contexts, and urban studies, with particular emphasis on the Global South. Krüger maintains an active research profile with numerous international collaborations and fieldwork projects across Africa.
His research interests span the interconnections between culture and disasters, urban justice, vulnerability patterns, and urban governance. Krüger approaches these topics through theoretical frameworks including theories of practice, political ecology, political economy, and governance approaches. He views culture as "a multiplicity of fields of practice, embedded in social and environmental contexts" that are constantly transforming under social pressures and environmental change.
The publications and research projects led by Krüger demonstrate consistent focus on disaster risk reduction through cultural understanding, urban resilience, and justice-oriented approaches to city planning. His work often examines the concept of "community" critically, explores urban green infrastructure, and investigates the right to the city framework in African contexts.
As an educator, Krüger actively involves students in research through field courses in locations such as the Okavango Delta (Botswana), Zanzibar, and high mountain environments, focusing on livelihoods, environmental perception, and disaster preparedness. His students have presented research at major conferences including AAG meetings and Anthropology, Weather and Climate Change conferences.
Current research projects under Krüger's leadership include AfriCity, JustUrban/JustUrban+, Cultures and Disasters, and various initiatives examining urban development in Sub-Saharan Africa. His major academic outputs include editing the IFRC World Disasters Report 2014 on Risk and Culture, co-authoring the book Cultures and Disasters, and contributing to research on Post-Apartheid Cities.
