Fred Smith is the James S. Carpentier Visiting Professor of Law at Columbia University. He has also served as a professor at Emory University since 2017 and was named Outstanding Professor of the Year in 2019 and 2022. His work centers on constitutional law, federal jurisdiction, and state sovereignty.

Smith's research explores accountability in the federal judiciary, constitutional litigation, and state sovereignty.
