Fred Shaw is a Visiting Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences. He holds a BA in Creative Writing from the University of Pittsburgh and an MFA from Carlow University. His teaching focuses on poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and journalism.
Shaw’s research explores the lives of service industry workers and working-class communities. His debut poetry collection, Scraping Away (2020), critically examines labor narratives and cultural unity through food. His work has appeared in Permafrost, Poet Lore, and podcasts like Well-Versed. Notable projects include a commissioned poem for the Westmoreland County Museum’s Bridging the Gap and contributions to the documentary Eating & Working & Eating & Working.
He has been a book reviewer since 2010 for outlets like Pittsburgh City Paper and led panels on literary criticism. In 2020, he was a finalist for Allegheny County’s Emerging Poet Laureate. Shaw also curates PQ Poem for Pittsburgh Quarterly Magazine and performs with the jazz-poetry collective The Stepping Stones.
