Frazer Ward serves as Co-Chair of the Art Department and Chair of Art History and Architecture at Smith College, where he holds the position of Professor of Art. His academic home is within the Department of Art in the College of Arts and Humanities, with his office located in Hillyer Hall 310.
Ward's research interests span multiple interconnected areas of contemporary art scholarship. His primary focus has been on performance art, with additional interests in the implications of new imaging technologies, the effects of globalization on art practices and histories, and the role of art in contemporary public spheres. His teaching encompasses the history and theory of both modern and contemporary art and architecture.
His scholarly publications include the influential book No Innocent Bystanders: Performance Art and Audience (2012) and the significant article The Productive Failures of Vito Acconci (2017), which demonstrate his sustained engagement with performance art history and theory. His work appears widely in academic books, journals, and exhibition catalogs.
Ward contributes to the academic community through editorial service, sitting on the editorial boards of the University of New England Press series Interfaces: Studies in Visual Culture and the electronic journal InVisible Culture.
His academic training includes a Ph.D. from Cornell University and undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Sydney, providing him with both American and international perspectives on art history.
