Frazer Heritage is a Senior Lecturer in Linguistics at Manchester Metropolitan University, affiliated with the Department of Languages, Information and Communications. He holds the position of Departmental Ethics Representative and leads the Narrative and Representation research strand at the Manchester Game Centre (MGC). His research focuses on corpus linguistics, critical discourse studies, and the representation of gender, sexuality, and identity in digital media, particularly in videogames and online communities.
He earned his PhD in Linguistics and has authored two monographs: Language, Gender, and Videogames (2021) and Incels and Ideologies (2023), as well as co-editing Analysing Representation: A Corpus and Discourse Textbook (2024). His work explores heteronormativity in incel discourse, LGBTQ+ representation in gaming, and the ethical dimensions of researching sensitive communities.
Key research interests include ludolinguistics, health communication, forensic linguistics, and the intersection of language with gender and sexuality. He has secured grants, including a 2024 internal award to investigate identity construction in Sea of Thieves, and collaborates with organizations like the Manchester Centre for Research in Linguistics (MCRL).
Professional roles include Secretary of the BAAL LGaS Special Interest Group, Book Review Editor for Journal of Corpora and Discourse Studies, and ESRC peer reviewer. He delivers outreach talks on gaming discourse and forensic linguistics to police, schools, and industry stakeholders.
Recent work includes forthcoming analyses of The Witcher series' masculinities and incel support networks in Manipulation, Influence and Deception (2025). His research bridges corpus methods with sociocultural critique, emphasizing ethical rigor and interdisciplinary collaboration.
