Frauke Wiese

Prof. Dr. Frauke Wiese serves as an Assistant Professor for the Transformation of Energy Systems at the European University of Flensburg within the Interdisciplinary Institute for Environmental, Social and Human Sciences and the Department of Energy and Environmental Management. Since May 2020, she has co-led the interdisciplinary junior research group "Energy Sufficiency" with Benjamin Best from the Wuppertal Institute.

Her educational path began with a voluntary ecological year, followed by studies in Environmental Management at the University of Flensburg. She deepened her expertise in geothermal energy during a semester abroad and internship in Reykjavik, Iceland. Her diploma thesis addressed system conflicts between wind energy and coal-fired power plants. After working on social acceptance of the energy transition at Deutsche Umwelthilfe in Berlin, she returned to complete her doctorate in April 2015 on open data and open source in energy system modelling, supported by the Reiner Lemoine Foundation scholarship.

Dr. Wiese's research centers on energy system modelling with a strong emphasis on open source methodologies. Her work spans renewable energy integration, energy transition strategies, and energy sufficiency. She co-developed the renpass electricity system model and is a co-initiator of the open energy modelling initiative. Her postdoctoral work at DTU involved the Balmorel community and the "Future Gas" project, analyzing the role of gases in energy system transformation.

As an educator, she has taught energy system modelling courses at both the European University of Flensburg and DTU. Currently, she leads the "Energy Sufficiency" research group, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to address demand-side solutions for the energy transition. Her career reflects a consistent commitment to advancing transparent and collaborative approaches in energy research.
