François Roche

François Roche serves as Professor of Architecture and Urbanism at The European Graduate School and holds current visiting professorships at the Taubman College of Architecture (University of Michigan), RMIT University, and the University of Pennsylvania. His extensive academic career includes prior appointments at Columbia University (2006-2013), the Bartlett School, Vienna University of Technology, ESARQ School of Architecture, and University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

Roche's research operates through three interconnected frameworks: Research as Speculation, Fiction as Practice, and Practice as Lifespan. His work with studios R&Sie(n) and New-Territories investigates biotope systems, climate adaptation, and narrative-driven architectural interventions, as documented in monographs including "Corrupted Biotopes" (2004), "Spoiled Climate" (2006), and "BioReboot" (2010). This theoretical-practical approach generates designs that remain speculative yet contextually plausible.

His recent publications reveal consistent exploration of ecophysical apparatuses and vitalist philosophies, with articles examining skizoid machines, animism, and nocturnal urban laboratories. These works demonstrate architectural engagement with science fiction tropes and ecological systems, challenging conventional boundaries between natural and artificial environments through experimental frameworks.

As president of New-Territories research laboratory, Roche oversees studios R&Sie(n) and [eIf/bʌt/c] that have exhibited internationally at the Venice Architecture Biennale (1990, 1996, 2000), Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, and Mori Art Museum. Their projects span permanent installations, competitions, and curated exhibitions that materialize theoretical concepts into tangible spatial experiences across global contexts.
