Geert Lovink is a Professor of Media Theory at the European Graduate School (EGS) since 2009. Previously, he held roles as a researcher in the Faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industries at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA), where he founded the Institute of Network Cultures (INC). His work critically examines digital media, internet culture, and social media, organizing major research initiatives like Video Vortex, Unlike Us, and MoneyLab. Lovink holds a PhD in English Literature from the University of Melbourne (2003) and an MA in Political Science from the University of Amsterdam (1983). He has held fellowships at the University of Queensland (2003) and Berlin Wissenschaftskolleg (2005-2006).
His research focuses on digital culture, critiques of social media, and internet-based revenue models. Key contributions include analyzing online video politics, Wikipedia's governance, and alternative social media models. Lovink co-founded the Fibreculture Journal and organized influential conferences such as the Tulipomania DotCom Conference (2000) and Dark Markets (2002). His publications span theoretical critiques and edited volumes on topics like free cooperation, art criticism, and internet economics.
Scientific awards include his post-doctoral fellowship (UQ) and Berlin Wissenschaftskolleg residency. His advising and grants include leading the Institute of Network Cultures and collaborating with institutions like Waag Society and Sarai New Media Centre. Current projects explore digital marginalization and the future of media criticism through INC’s initiatives.
