Max Planck Institute for the History of Scienceمعرفی
Franziska Marliese Fröhlich is a postdoctoral scholar in the Lise Meitner Research Group "China in the Global System of Science" at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) in Berlin, where she has been working since June 2023. The MPIWG is one of over 80 research institutes administered by the Max Planck Society, dedicated to understanding scientific thinking and practice as historical phenomena.
Her research focuses on consumer responsibilization at the intersection of food consumption and the environment in consumer advice, science communication, and the popular understanding of science in China. More broadly, she examines governance, responsibilization, and subject-making in contemporary China. Her work connects environmental concerns with political structures through the lens of everyday practices like food consumption.
Her current research projects include "Green Eating and Ecological Risk in China," "Quantifying the Population's Scientific Quality: The Evolution of China's Scientific Literacy Surveys," and "Popular Science Representations of Artificial Intelligence Research: Investigating the Values of Doing Science in China." These projects reveal her focus on how scientific knowledge is produced, communicated, and consumed in Chinese society, particularly regarding environmental issues and food systems.
- Heinrich Böll Foundation scholarship

Before joining MPIWG, Fröhlich worked as a lecturer and research fellow in English Literature and Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Würzburg and served as managing director of the European Chinese Language and Culture Program at Peking University. She has presented her research at numerous international conferences including the ESA Conference in Porto (2024), GCSC/DNC30-Conference in Gießen (2024), and the Annual Conference of the German Association for China Studies (2023).
