Professor Franz-Josef Deiters is an Honorary Associate in the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Sydney. His academic journey includes degrees from Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen: M.A. (1993), Dr. phil. (1997), and Habilitation (2004). He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 2010. Before joining Sydney in 2020, he taught at Monash University (2006–2020) and Eberhard Karls University (1993–2006), with visiting roles at institutions like the University of Sarajevo and Goethe University Frankfurt.
His research focuses on German literature from the 18th century to the present, literary aesthetics, theatre mediology, and intersections of literature and philosophy. Current projects explore neo-avant-garde theatre of the early 21st century, extending his trilogy on theatre mediology begun with Die Entweltlichung der Bühne (2015) and Verweltlichung der Bühne? (2019).
Deiters is co-editor of Limbus: Australisches Jahrbuch für germanistische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft and the Transpositionen book series. He contributes to professional associations like the German Studies Association of Australia and the International Goethe Society. His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and critical essays, reflecting expertise in theatre history, philosophy, and cultural memory.
