Daniela Hempen is a Lecturer in the Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC), part of the Faculty of Arts. With over 20 years of teaching experience, she specializes in German language and literature. Her roles include teaching undergraduate courses such as Beginners' German, Intermediate German, and specialized literature courses like German Literature after 1945 and Progress and Disaster: Studies in the 20th and 21st Centuries.
Education:
- M.A. in German and Scandinavian Languages and Literatures from Eberhard-Karls Universität Tübingen (1991)
- Ph.D. in Medieval German Literature and Culture from UBC (1998)
Research Interests: Her work bridges medieval and modern studies, focusing on

- Literary dystopias/utopias and environmentalism
- Representations of trauma in German literature
- Analysis of soundscapes and music in post-WWII narratives
