Franklin Obeng-Odoom is a Professor of Global Development Studies at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and a Fellow of the Teachers' Academy, recognizing his distinguished teaching. He specializes in the political economy of development, stratification economics, and environmental issues, with a focus on the Global South. His research explores topics such as natural resource management, urban sustainability, and inequality.
Obeng-Odoom previously taught at Australian universities and has held roles including Docent in Urban and Economic Sociology at Turku University. He is Editor of the Handbook on Alternative Global Development and serves on editorial boards of journals like American Journal of Economics and Sociology. His work emphasizes decolonizing economic thought and addressing systemic inequalities.
Key publications include books like Property, Institutions, and Social Stratification in Africa (winner of the Joan Robinson Best Book Prize) and The Commons in an Age of Uncertainty. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles, covering topics from oil-driven development to feminist care ethics.
