Frank Vleggaar is a Full Professor at Utrecht University’s Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, specializing in gastrointestinal and liver diseases within the Cancer strategic research program. He serves as Medical Head of the department (2016–present) and Professor (2017–present), with a focus on endoscopic techniques, pancreatic diseases, and cancer risk assessment.
- Current roles: Medical Head of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, UMC Utrecht (2016–present); Professor in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, UMC Utrecht/UU (2017–present); Examinor for Medicine study 'Stofwisseling 2'; President of Netherlands Association of Hepatogastroenterologists (2019–present).
- Prior roles: Head of Endoscopy Unit (2006–2016); Chairman of Quality Inspection Committee, Dutch Society of Gastroenterologists (2014–2019).
His research interests span Gastroenterology (e.g., pancreatic diseases, ERCP optimization), Oncology (cancer detection in young patients, lymphovascular invasion in colorectal cancer), and Regenerative Medicine (organoid technology for cystic fibrosis). Recent publications address:
- Cancer risk stratification in patients with alarm symptoms;
- Lymphovascular invasion detection variability in colorectal cancer;
- Biliary brushing sensitivity improvements during ERCP;
- Organoid-based personalized medicine for cystic fibrosis.
These works highlight his contributions to endoscopic diagnostics, cancer prevention, and translational research in gastrointestinal disorders.
