Frank Russell is Professor of History and Classics and Bingham Endowed Chair at Transylvania University. His research focuses on ancient history, particularly military intelligence, counter-insurgency, and frontier studies at the margins of ancient empires. Russell is actively involved in archaeological field work at the Antiochia ad Cragum site in Turkey, where he trains students in excavation techniques and cultural context.
His research examines political and military intelligence in classical Greece, Greek and Roman military history, and specialized topics like the Rhodian watchtower system in the Aegean. Russell has published extensively on these subjects, including his book Information Gathering in Classical Greece.
Russell teaches courses in ancient history, Greek, and Latin, while also contributing to Transylvania's common core curriculum. His teaching philosophy emphasizes transforming information into actionable intelligence.
