Dr. Kurzmann's research centers on the theological concepts of the Reformation period and Early Modern Era, with particular emphasis on how eschatological ideas were expressed through various media. His work examines inauguration sermons as windows into how early modern communities conceptualized sacred spaces and theological concepts. He has led a DFG-funded project on 'Theology and Intermediality of Early Modern Inauguration Sermons' (2019-2022) and currently contributes to the edition project on Paul Gerhardt's works. His interdisciplinary approach bridges theology with literary studies, history, and media theory.
His publication record shows a consistent focus on early modern Lutheran theology, with recent works expanding into digital pedagogy for theological education and interdisciplinary approaches to religious history. The trend in his scholarship demonstrates increasing methodological diversity while maintaining core interests in how theological concepts were communicated and embodied in early modern contexts.
- Karl H. Ditze-Preis 2017 (awarded for his dissertation on 'The Discourse on the Last Judgment in the Confessions of the Early Modern Period')
Dr. Kurzmann has served as a temporary professor for Church and Dogma History during the Winter Semester 2021/22 and was a Postdoc Fellow at the Maimonides Centre for Advanced Studies (2022-2023). He has been a member of the DFG Graduate College 'Interconfessionality in the Early Modern Period' since 2013.
Dr. Kurzmann collaborates with multiple research teams, including the Paul Gerhardt edition project and interdisciplinary groups studying sacred intermediality.
