Johann Anselm Steiger

Johann Anselm Steiger is Professor of Church History and Historical Theology at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Humanities. He directs the Institute for the History of Christianity and coordinates DFG-funded projects on spiritual intermediality and early modern written artefacts.

His research examines Reformation theology, Baroque spirituality, and the intersection of visual culture with religious practice. Steiger has led projects reconstructing liturgical spaces through virtual reality and editing critical editions of theological texts. He received the Hermann-Sasse-Preis (2018) for outstanding contributions to Lutheran studies.

Steiger mentors doctoral candidates in the Graduate School 'Interkonfessionalität in der Frühen Neuzeit' and has served as Prodean for Research. His publications include critical editions of Johann Arndt's theological works and studies on sacred emblematic traditions in European churches.
