Francisco Urzúa is a Professor of Finance at the Faculty of Finance, Bayes Business School, City University of London. Previously, he served as a Reader at Bayes (2019–2024) and Assistant Professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam (2013–2018). His qualifications include a PhD in Finance from Tilburg University (2014), MSc in Accounting and Finance from LSE (2009), and a BA in Business and Economics from Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (2006).
His research focuses on corporate finance, corporate governance, ownership structures, and business groups. Notable topics include privatization impacts, investor protection, internal capital markets, and the effects of IPOs on firm strategy. His work has been recognized with awards such as the Arthur Cole Prize (2020) for contributions to economic history.
Urzúa has published extensively in top-tier journals like Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, and Management Science. His recent work explores funding contagion through common owners, mandatory disclosure effects on M&A activity, and the mental health impacts of prolonged refugee camp stays.
He collaborates widely, with co-authors including Borja Larrain, Mounu Prem, and Giorgo Sertsios. His research bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical analysis, addressing critical issues in corporate governance and market development.
