Francisco Omil

Francisco Omil is a Full Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) since 2010, previously holding roles as Associate (1998–2010) and Assistant Professor (1996–1998). He completed his Ph.D. in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Santiago de Compostela (1993) and postdoctoral studies at Wageningen University (Netherlands, 1994–1995). His expertise spans wastewater treatment, emerging contaminant removal, and anaerobic bioprocesses.

Research focuses on eliminating micropollutants (pharmaceuticals, endocrine disruptors) in urban and hospital wastewaters, developing hybrid systems like the SeMPAC process, and advancing decentralized treatment technologies. He leads projects such as ARES (assessing contaminants in segregated wastewater) and PRESAGE (decentralized treatment for antibiotic resistance control). His work integrates microbial community analysis, bioreactor optimization, and eco-toxicological assessments.

He has supervised numerous doctoral and master’s students, including Silvana Quiton (antibiotic biotransformation) and Miguel Martínez (anoxic wastewater treatment). Over 40 patents and 150+ publications highlight his contributions. Collaborations with institutions like Augas de Galicia and Aqualia emphasize applied research in sustainable water management.

Teaching includes BSc Chemical Engineering, MSc Environmental Engineering, and PhD programs in Chemical and Environmental Engineering. He actively participates in conferences and publishes on topics like microbial nitrogen cycling (N-damo communities) and bioassay-driven treatment efficacy.
