معرفی
Professor Francis Pope is a Professor of Atmospheric Science at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham. He holds a PhD from the University of Bristol (2005), MChem (International) from the University of Leeds (2001), and MA (Cantab) from the University of Cambridge (2010).
Professor Pope trained as a physical chemist and applies this fundamental knowledge to atmospheric science research. His primary research interests include air pollution, climate change, fundamental aerosol chemistry and microphysics, and city resilience. He leads the 'A Systems Approach to Air Pollution (ASAP) East Africa' project, which takes a multi-disciplinary approach to tackling air pollution in Nairobi, Kampala, and Addis Ababa.
His recent research output shows a strong focus on air pollution health effects, urban air quality monitoring using innovative sensor technologies, and the relationship between transportation systems and emissions. His work spans multiple geographical contexts including the UK, East Africa, Mongolia, and the Middle East, demonstrating a commitment to addressing global air quality challenges.
- Associate editor of Atmospheric Measurement Techniques journal
- Convener of the 'Aerosol chemistry and microphysics' session at the European Geophysical Union conference
- Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, European Geophysical Union, and UK Aerosol Society
- Regular reviewer for top journals including Nature Communications, Environmental Science & Technology, and Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics
Professor Pope has supervised doctoral researchers in assessment of geoengineering options, aerosol interactions between the atmosphere and biosphere, and instrumentation for atmospheric chemistry investigations. His group provided scientific content and appeared on BBC2's 'Fighting for Air' documentary, demonstrating his commitment to public engagement with atmospheric science issues.
