Francis Halzen is a Vilas Research Professor and Gregory Breit Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Department of Physics. He is a leading figure in particle astrophysics, renowned for his role as principal investigator of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a kilometer-scale neutrino detector in Antarctica. His research focuses on high-energy neutrinos, cosmic rays, and their origins in astrophysical phenomena such as active galactic nuclei and supernovae.
Halzen's career includes pioneering the AMANDA experiment (1987–2009) and expanding it into IceCube. He has published over 1,000 papers and contributed to landmark discoveries, including the first observation of cosmic neutrinos (2013). His honors include the Balzan Prize (2015), Smithsonian Ingenuity Award (2014), and membership in the National Academy of Sciences (2024).
His work integrates theoretical and experimental physics, emphasizing multi-messenger astronomy. Recent studies include identifying blazars as neutrino sources and probing neutrino emission from the Galactic plane. Halzen has advised numerous students and serves on global advisory boards for particle astrophysics projects.
