Francis Halzen is a Vilas Research Professor and Gregory Breit Professor in the Physics Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has served since 1972. He currently serves as Principal Investigator and co-Spokesperson for the IceCube Project and previously served as Acting Director of the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (2013-2014). His academic career at UW-Madison progressed from Assistant Professor (1972) to Associate Professor (1974) to Professor (1977), with distinguished appointments including Hilldale Professor (1991) and Gregory Breit Distinguished Professor (1987).
Halzen earned his educational credentials from the University of Louvain, Belgium, including a Master's degree (1966), Ph.D. (1969), and Agrégé de l'Enseignement Supérieur (1972). His international experience includes positions at CERN, University of Tokyo, University of Durham, and the University of Louvain where he served as Lector from 1977-1983.
Halzen's research focuses on the intersection of particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology, with particular emphasis on neutrino physics and particle astrophysics. His work has pioneered the field of neutrino astronomy, leading to the development of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole. His theoretical work spans dark matter, supersymmetry, physics beyond the Standard Model, and cosmic ray physics. As a theorist working closely with experimental projects, he has bridged theoretical predictions with observational capabilities in high-energy astrophysics.
Analysis of Halzen's recent publications reveals a clear trajectory in neutrino astronomy and multi-messenger astrophysics. His work demonstrates an evolution from theoretical foundations to the practical detection of cosmic neutrinos, culminating in the groundbreaking 2013 observation of extraterrestrial neutrinos. His research increasingly integrates multiple observational channels, particularly combining neutrino data with gravitational wave and electromagnetic observations as seen in his 2017 multi-messenger study of binary neutron star mergers.

As Principal Investigator for the IceCube Project since 2001, Halzen has led one of the most ambitious neutrino astronomy initiatives in history. He has served on numerous prestigious scientific advisory committees including those for SNO, Telescope Array, Auger-Upgrade experiments, Max Planck Institutes, and ICRR of the University of Tokyo. His leadership extends to the US Particle Physics Prioritization Panel and ApPEC particle astrophysics advisory panel in Europe. The IceCube collaboration, which he co-founded after working on the precursor AMANDA experiment, represents a decades-long commitment to establishing neutrino astronomy as a fundamental observational tool in astrophysics.
Halzen directs the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a cubic-kilometer detector embedded in Antarctic ice at the South Pole. This facility, operated by the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center which he formerly directed, represents the culmination of his vision for using natural media as particle detectors. His research group at UW-Madison continues to analyze data from this facility while planning next-generation neutrino observatories that will further expand our understanding of the high-energy universe.
