Francis Gurry is a Professorial Fellow at Melbourne Law School and serves as Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). He holds an LLB and LLM from the University of Melbourne, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. His expertise spans intellectual property law, international legal frameworks, and electronic commerce regulation.
Prior to his WIPO roles, he practiced as a solicitor in Melbourne and Sydney. He authored a seminal textbook on trade secrets law and co-authored a leading treatise on international intellectual property systems. Gurry contributes to global legal institutions as a Vice President of the International Federation of Commercial Arbitration Institutions (IFCAI).
His career has focused on bridging international legal challenges in technology, innovation, and dispute resolution. Fluent in English and French, he advises on matters ranging from patent systems to digital economy governance.
