Francesco Zavatti is a Researcher at Södertörn University's Department of History and Contemporary Studies and an Associate Professor of History at Lund University since 2024. He holds a national scientific habilitation as Associate Professor in Contemporary History from the Italian Ministry for Universities and Research (2023).
His PhD in Historical Studies was completed at Södertörn University (2016), followed by postdoctoral work at Roma Tre University and multiple research roles at Södertörn's Institute of Contemporary History.
Zavatti specializes in Eastern and Central European history with concentrated expertise on Romania, examining transnational historical connections and memory politics across the Baltic Sea and Eastern Europe. His research critically engages with far-right movements, displaced fascist networks, humanitarian mobilization during crises, and environmental representations in media.
As principal investigator, he leads the Östersjöstiftelsen-funded project 'Strategies for Survival of Displaced Fascists: The Romanian Legionaries in the Western Hemisphere, 1945–1965' and previously directed the Ridderstad Foundation project on 'Competing Visual Representations of the Future in Times of Environmental Consciousness'. His current work includes the Erik Philip-Sörensen Foundation study on Moldovan/Romanian civil society responses to Ukrainian refugees, with upcoming participation in the Swedish Research Council project 'Civil Society without Boundaries: Nordic Humanitarianism Facing the Biafra Crisis' (2025).
Zavatti serves as Södertörn University's administrative manager for the Nordic research network ReNEW and was Research Coordinator at the Institute of Contemporary History (2023–2024).
