Francesco G. Duina serves as Charles A. Dana Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Social Sciences Division at Bates College. With advanced degrees from Harvard University and the University of Chicago, his research examines the intersection of economic systems, political institutions, and cultural frameworks, with special focus on international trade agreements, globalization dynamics, and European integration. Duina has held academic appointments at Harvard University, Copenhagen Business School, and the University of British Columbia.
His scholarly contributions include seven books addressing topics ranging from free trade frameworks to American patriotism among economically disadvantaged groups. Recognized works include Broke and Patriotic: Why Poor Americans Love Their Country (2018 Independent Publisher Book Award) and The Social Construction of Free Trade (ALA Outstanding Academic Book, Chinese translation 2009). Duina actively contributes to public discourse through op-eds in major publications and serves on editorial boards for Economy and Society and Contexts.
Current projects include co-editing The Social Acceptance of Inequality (forthcoming 2025) and participation in the Jean Monnet Network on Transatlantic Trade Politics (2020-2024).
