Mara C. Tieken is an Associate Professor of Education and Department Co-Chair at Bates College. Her work focuses on racial and educational equity in rural schools, particularly the intersection of place, identity, and educational opportunity. She holds a doctorate from Harvard Graduate School of Education, following teaching roles in rural Tennessee.
Her research includes the books Educated Out (2023) and Why Rural Schools Matter (2014), both examining rural educational landscapes. Current projects, funded by the Spencer and Reed Foundations, investigate school closures’ impacts on rural Black communities and tools for community advocacy. She co-leads the National Education Research and Development Center for Improving Rural Postsecondary Education.
Tieken’s expertise spans community organizing, STEM education in rural areas, and policy analysis. She has advised the National Academies’ K-12 STEM Education committee and frequently publishes op-eds on rural education politics and race. Awards include the 2024 Kroepsch Teaching Award and 2016 Lynton Engagement Scholarship Award.
