Francesco Cosentino is a Professor of Clinical Cardiovascular Research and Senior Physician at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Medicine, Solna. He leads the Molecular Cardiology Research Group, focusing on cardiovascular mechanisms linked to diabetes, obesity, and aging. His work bridges molecular epigenetics and clinical outcomes, particularly the interplay of environmental factors and genetic pathways in cardiovascular disease pathogenesis.
Research interests include epigenetic regulation of vascular dysfunction, oxidative stress, and inflammation in metabolic disorders. Notable contributions include advancing ESC guidelines on diabetes and cardiovascular care, emphasizing novel glucose-lowering therapies like SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 agonists for cardioprotection.
Key achievements include the 2022 Doctor Honoris Causa from Victor Babeș University. His translational research program integrates clinical trials, animal models, and patient cohorts to identify epigenetic biomarkers for cardiovascular risk stratification.
Funding sources include the Swedish Research Council, Swedish Heart & Lung Foundation, and international collaborations. He advises PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in molecular cardiology and epigenetics, mentoring the next generation of cardiovascular scientists.
The Molecular Cardiology Group hosts a dynamic team exploring chromatin remodeling, vascular aging, and gene-environment interactions. Current projects investigate epigenetic modifiers as therapeutic targets and the transgenerational effects of metabolic diseases.
