Francesco Belardetti

Francesco Belardetti serves as a Sessional Instructor in the Department of Psychology within the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia. He has been teaching the "Memory and Learning" course at UBC since 2012, contributing to undergraduate education in psychological sciences.

Dr. Belardetti maintains a long-standing research interest in understanding how social relationships and culture shape the human brain, and how the brain in turn orchestrates our behaviors, with a specific focus on psychiatry. His scholarly work demonstrates expertise across multiple domains including molecular neuroscience, neural signaling pathways, and neuropharmacology. His research has appeared in premier journals such as Nature Neuroscience, Journal of Neuroscience, and Neuron.

An analysis of his publication record spanning 1986-2011 reveals a consistent trajectory of investigating neural mechanisms at the molecular and cellular levels. Early work focused on Aplysia sensory neurons and potassium channel dynamics, while later research expanded to mammalian systems, pain pathways, and more complex neural signaling mechanisms. His work consistently centers on understanding the fundamental processes that govern brain function and behavior through examination of ion channels, neurotransmission, and cellular signaling.

Prior to his position at UBC, Dr. Belardetti taught pharmacology for medical students at UT Southwestern in Dallas (1987-96) and physiology for medical residents at the University of Pisa (1981-83). His extensive background in both research and clinical teaching has provided him with a unique perspective that enriches his current instructional role in psychology.
