Francesca Pugliese

Francesca Pugliese is a Reader in Radiology (HCC) and Consultant in Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging at Queen Mary University of London, affiliated with the William Harvey Research Institute. She holds roles in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and the Centre for Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging. Her clinical training began at the University of Genoa (MD, 2000), followed by specialization in imaging and a PhD in 2008 (Erasmus MC, Rotterdam) on coronary artery CT. She joined Imperial College London and the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre before becoming a Senior Clinical Lecturer at Barts in 2010.

Her research focuses on non-invasive cardiac imaging techniques (CT, MRI, nuclear cardiology) applied to heart conditions like ischaemic disease. She has contributed to hybrid imaging (PET/CT) and clinical implementation of imaging modalities. Professional roles include membership in the ESC’s Nuclear Cardiology & CT Working Group, the British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging, and NICE’s Diagnostic Assessment Programme.

Key collaborators include Prof Magdi Yaqoob, Dr Andrew Wragg, and international experts like Prof Pim J de Feyter and Prof MG Myriam Hunink. She has secured funding from the European Society of Cardiology, Seventh Framework Programme, and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

Her career spans roles at the Royal Brompton Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital, and the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, reflecting her dual expertise in clinical practice and academic research. She leads the NIHR Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit and contributes to translational imaging advancements.
