Dr Francesca Giliberto is a Research Fellow in the Department of Management and Organisations at Leeds University Business School, University of Leeds. She is an interdisciplinary researcher and conservation architect with expertise in cultural heritage, sustainable development, urban conservation, and global policy implementation. Her work bridges academia, policy, and practice, focusing on the alignment of international frameworks with local realities in heritage and development contexts.
Her research interests include the local implementation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in urban environments, change management in historic cities, people-centred development, and systemic strategies linking cultural heritage and sustainable urban development. She employs inclusive, participatory, and human-rights-based approaches, contributing to transformative initiatives through interdisciplinary collaboration between the cultural and business sectors.
Dr Giliberto has secured funding from UK Research and Innovation, AHRC, DCMS, Research England, and international foundations. She has led post-doctoral research projects on heritage and global development at the University of Kent and the University of Leeds, working with principal investigators on topics such as heritage-based tourism in Sub-Saharan Africa and arts and humanities for global development. Her work is deeply connected to global agendas including the UN 2030 Agenda, UNESCO’s Historic Urban Landscape Recommendation, and UN-Habitat’s New Urban Agenda.
She is an active member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), serving on the UK Committee, the ICOMOS SDGs Working Group, and the International Committee on Historic Cities, Towns and Villages. Her collaborations span institutions such as UNESCO, the British Council, the African World Heritage Fund, and over 50 universities worldwide.
At Leeds, she supervises master’s students in modules including LUBS5970 (Dissertations) and LUBS5798 (Project/Dissertation), and leads the Research Partnerships module FOAH2001 with a project on sustainable development in UK UNESCO Designated Sites. Her professional experience includes advising the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the Italian Ministry of Culture, and the Climate Heritage Network.
