Professor Aylin Orbasli is a leading academic and practitioner in architectural and urban heritage, holding a professorship at Oxford Brookes University's School of Architecture. She specializes in architectural regeneration, heritage management, and urban conservation with a focus on the Middle East and Mediterranean regions. Her work bridges theory and practice, addressing challenges like tourism impacts, heritage commodification, and adaptive reuse in historic urban environments.
She co-founded the MA in International Architectural Regeneration and Development and is deputy director of the Endangered Wooden Architecture Programme (EWAP), a £1.3 million initiative funded by the Arcadia Fund. Her research explores the intersection of heritage, tourism, and identity, particularly in historic cities facing modern pressures such as over-tourism and climate change. She has advised UNESCO and governments on World Heritage Site management, including strategic plans for Petra in Jordan.
Orbasli has supervised 13 PhD completions and examined over 30 doctoral theses globally. Her professional memberships include ICOMOS, the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), and the British Institute at Ankara (BIAA). She frequently presents at international conferences, delivering keynotes on topics like heritage conservation and sustainable urban development.
Her research impacts policy and practice, influencing conservation frameworks, tourism strategies, and education programs in heritage fields. Current projects include advancing risk management for cultural heritage and promoting community-led regeneration in India and the Middle East.
