Frances McGinnity is an Associate Research Professor at the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) in Dublin and Adjunct Professor of Sociology at Trinity College Dublin. She serves as joint coordinator of research areas in Social Inclusion & Equality and Migration, Integration & Demography at ESRI. Since September 2021, she has been a Visiting Senior Fellow at LSE's Centre for the Analysis of Social Exclusion (CASE). She holds a doctorate from Nuffield College, University of Oxford (2001) and previously worked at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin.
Her research focuses on equality, discrimination, migrant integration, social attitudes, work-life balance, and labour market processes, primarily in Ireland with comparative European perspectives. She employs quantitative methods, surveys, experiments, and qualitative interviews. McGinnity coordinates major research programs including the Integration and Equality Programme for Ireland's Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, and contributes to cross-border Ireland/Northern Ireland studies through the Shared Island Initiative.
Her publications predominantly explore migrant integration patterns, attitudinal studies, and labour market inequalities, with recent work examining COVID-19 impacts, gender inclusion, and discrimination against marginalized groups. She actively engages policymakers and presents findings to parliamentary committees.
McGinnity holds advisory roles including Senior Research Advisor for the European Migration Network and serves on IMISCOE's Standing Committee on Race, Racism and Discrimination. She maintains extensive policy engagement through government reports and media dissemination.
