Dr Frances Kamm is a Lecturer in Film and Director of Education at the School of Arts, University of Kent. She holds a BA (Hons) in English and American Literature and Film Studies, an MA in Film Studies (dissertation on David Lynch’s Lost Highway and Freud’s ‘The Uncanny’), and a PhD (2015) titled ‘The Technological Uncanny and the Representation of the Body in Early and Digital Cinema’. Her research focuses on film history, technological developments in cinema, digital animation, theories of the uncanny, and Gothic/horror genres.
Publications include analyses of Crimson Peak, Aliens, and What Lies Beneath through Gothic and feminist lenses, co-edited volumes on Gothic Heroines on Screen, and special journal issues on Gothic Feminisms. Her work bridges film studies with interdisciplinary cultural critique, emphasizing gender and technological intersections in cinematic narratives.
Frances has contributed to academic reviews (e.g., the Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies) and maintains editorial roles in scholarly publications. Her educational leadership includes coordinating the Film and Media course at Kent.
